Saona
or Catalina?
The Dominican Republic's two most-loved day-trip islands sit just twenty kilometers apart,
both inside the same national park, both reached from the same marina. They are not the same trip.
One is a beach. One is a reef. Here's how to choose.
East · 12 km from Bayahibe
Saona Island
Beaches, the Natural Pool, palms, the village.
Southwest · 5 km from Bayahibe
Catalina Island
Snorkeling, the wall, the reef, the quiet.
02 / The 30-second answer
Saona for beaches, palms, the Natural Pool sandbar, and the social
catamaran day. Catalina for snorkeling at the wall — one of the
best reef sites in the Caribbean — and far fewer people. First-time visitor?
Probably Saona. Repeat visitor or snorkeler? Probably Catalina. Doing both is possible
(and great) on a private charter.
03 / At a glance
What each island is.
East of Bayahibe
Saona is a beach.
One hundred and ten square kilometers of white sand, palm forest, and the Caribbean's
most photographed sandbar. There's a fishing village (Mano Juan), a lunch buffet on the sand,
and a hundred-plus other guests on the same boat as you. The classic DR day trip.

Southwest of Bayahibe
Catalina is a reef.
Ten square kilometers of mostly uninhabited island ringed by some of the best reef in the
Caribbean. The headline feature is "the wall" — a vertical coral cliff that drops from
five to thirty-plus meters within arm's reach. Snorkelers and divers come here for
visibility, not photographs of palms.

Small but pristine. Most visitors spend more time in the water than on it —
but if you want a quiet sand interlude between snorkels, it's here.
07 / Have time for both?
Do them on different days.
Same marina, completely different days. Saona and Catalina aren't competing —
they're complementary, and most week-long Dominican Republic vacations leave
room for both, on separate days.
Saona is your beach day — palm shores, the Natural Pool, lunch on the sand,
four to five hours of sun. Catalina is your snorkel day — the wall, the reef,
the quieter water. Each fills a full day. Pick the one that fits this week,
and come back for the other.
Both islands depart from Bayahibe on the south coast. From any Punta Cana, Bávaro, or
Cap Cana hotel, the road transfer is identical — about 90 minutes south. Once on the
boat, the directions diverge.
From Bayahibe
Saona — east
About 12 km east, 30–60 minutes by boat. Catamaran or speedboat for group; private yacht
for charter. Most boats stop at the Natural Pool on the return leg.
From Bayahibe
Catalina — southwest
About 5 km southwest, 15–30 minutes by boat. Smaller vessels typical. Most boats anchor
at the Aquarium first, then move to the wall, with a beach stop in between.

Saona vs Catalina FAQs.
Don't see your question? Either desk runs both islands and can talk through which one
fits your trip.
What's the difference between Saona and Catalina Island?
Saona is the larger, beach-and-palm island famous for the Natural Pool sandbar and the village of Mano Juan. Catalina is much smaller, mostly uninhabited, and famous for snorkeling — particularly "the wall," a vertical coral drop-off about a kilometer offshore. Saona is a beach day; Catalina is an underwater day.
Which is better — Saona or Catalina?
They're different products. If you want photographable beaches, the Natural Pool sandbar, palm trees, and the social catamaran-day experience, choose Saona. If you want world-class snorkeling, fewer crowds, and one of the best reef walls in the Caribbean, choose Catalina. For a first-time DR visitor, Saona usually wins. For repeat visitors and snorkelers, Catalina.
Can I visit both Saona and Catalina in one day?
Realistically no, and we don't recommend trying. Both islands are full-day trips from the same marina and neither fits comfortably alongside the other — by the time you've done a proper Catalina snorkel morning, the day's best light and water for Saona is past. The right approach is to do them on separate days if your trip has time. Most week-long Dominican Republic vacations have room for both.
How big is Catalina compared to Saona?
Catalina is roughly 10 square kilometers; Saona is about 110 square kilometers — eleven times larger. Saona has multiple beaches, an inhabited village, and large palm forests. Catalina has a few small beaches and is mostly fringed by coral reef.
Is Catalina better for snorkeling than Saona?
Yes, by a wide margin. Catalina has "the wall" — a vertical coral cliff that drops from 5 meters to over 30 meters within a few feet, with visibility often exceeding 25 meters. It's consistently rated among the top snorkeling sites in the Caribbean. Saona's Natural Pool is a sandbar, not a reef; the experience is standing in shallow water with starfish, not snorkeling over coral.
Where do tours to Catalina depart from?
Bayahibe — the same marina as Saona tours. Catalina sits roughly 5 km southwest of Bayahibe (versus Saona's 12 km east), so the boat ride is shorter — typically 15–30 minutes versus Saona's 30–60 minutes.
How crowded is Catalina vs Saona?
Saona attracts hundreds of guests per day across multiple operators; the beaches are busy and the Natural Pool is shared with other groups. Catalina draws far fewer — typically dozens per day — partly because the snorkel-focused appeal is narrower. If avoiding crowds matters, Catalina wins.
How much does a Catalina trip cost compared to Saona?
Pricing is similar. Group excursions to Catalina run roughly USD $89–$119 per person; Saona is $89–$129. Private yacht charters to either island start around $1,800 per boat and scale with vessel size. Combo trips covering both islands run $2,500 and up by yacht.
Are there beaches on Catalina Island?
Yes, but small. The main beach (Playa Catalina) is a short strip on the island's southwestern side, palm-dotted but limited in length. Most visitors spend more time on the boat or in the water than on the sand. Saona is the better choice if beach time is the main goal.
